Albendazole, marketed as Albenza among others, is a benzimidazole medication used for the treatment of a variety of parasitic worm infestations.[2] It is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic, effective against roundworms, tapeworms, and flukes.[3]

Albendazole is used for a wide range of diseases caused by parasitic worms inclduing: giardiasis, trichuriasis, filariasis, neurocysticercosis, hydatid disease, enterobiasis, and ascariasis, among others.[4]

Potentially serious side effects include bone marrow suppression which usually improves on stopping the medication.[2] Liver inflammation has been reported and those with prior liver problems are at greater risk.[2] Common side effects include: nausea, abdominal pains, and headaches.[2] It is pregnancy category C in the United States and category D in Australia, meaning it may cause harm if taken by a pregnant women.[5][6]

Albendazole was first discovered at the SmithKline Animal Health Laboratories in 1972. It is on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines, a list of the most important medications needed in a basic health system.[7] It is marketed in the U.S. by Amedra Pharmaceuticals, and by GlaxoSmithKline in international markets.[8]
